General Cutlass SX455 Q&A

Hi Bruce - Here is my typical response to the question of how many U Code cars were built when it comes up:

There were 11,571 Supreme convertibles built in 1972. A good estimate based on 15+ years of watching these cars is that about 15-20% were U code 455s, especially since the convertible production number includes the 1,171 1972 442 convertibles (with both 350s and 455s). That would be somewhere between 1,700 and 2,315 Supreme convertibles built with the 455. Deduct the 66 V Codes and 33 X Codes and you have even less that were U Code 455/TH400 cars. I would guess that a fair number of them were stripped of their 455s over the years for use in 442s and other fastback and ragtop Cutlasses, so who knows how many are left. I have copies of the actual 1972 Olds production records from the GM Heritage Center and there is no mention of how many 455/TH400 Supremes were built. However, if someone wrote to Olds years ago and asked while the records existed, numbers may surface someday...

Hope this helps somewhat.

Terry

Been to Oldsmobile Lansing museum and told records fire took everything but color and other available minor info. My car I've owned 22yrs and looked everywhere including top of gas tank and inside head liner along with the usual carpet, seats, dash, and inside panels. Pretty sure my car could have been show room dealer ordered since it's loaded with options still would be nice to have the build sheet and how many U codes built. Thanks for any info.

So you've expanded this website to include 1972 U And V code cars. I joined hoping for info on these but see nothing. I have a 72 U code and want to see production number data along with other info. Hope you have some numbers for me. Thanks
